Of course, the Chowan River isn’t the only place to get on the water in Gates County. The river and its tributaries are accessible from nearly anywhere, and the northeastern section of the county is home to a portion of the Great Dismal Swamp. Because of the ready availability of usable waterways, boating, paddling, and fishing are popular pastimes in the area.
The jewel of the county is Merchants Millpond State Park, which harbors an ecosystem rare for this area: a bald cypress swamp. Replete with huge cypress growing out of the quiet waters, tupelo, and Spanish moss, the park is a step away to another place and time. Deep within the park lays Lassiter Swamp, known for its Enchanted Forest, a stand of ancient trees gnarled by mistletoe into eerie and wondrous shapes. Birds and wildlife of all types abound in the park, and the rangers regularly hold events and seminars to teach visitors—children in particular—about all the park has to offer.
